Episode 43 Romans 7:14-25 "I'm a Grace Girl"
Thursday Aug 15, 2024
Thursday Aug 15, 2024
In episode 43, Larry brings much clarity to the Christian walk set before us.
In the discussion portion Joy and Faithann wrap up Season 2 with final thoughts on Larry's lessons, focusing mainly on how to look at the Law of God properly, under grace.
These are the wonderful words Faithann spoke in our discussion on the place of the Law for Christians:
"We aren’t Olympians, we are recreational swimmers.
Just as a father might take his son to the local swimming pool to teach him how to swim, the Holy Spirit takes us to the Scriptures to show us how to live as Christians. And this is just one of the jobs of the Holy Spirit, along with pointing us to Christ.
The paramount truth for the father and son as recreational swimmers, what is most true about them, as the father teaches and as the son learns, as they swim together, is their relationship.
In contrast, the driving truth for the Olympian and his coach is that Gold Medal. It’s the glory. It’s the measurement. It’s the comparison.
The coach and athlete’s relationship is rooted in and surrounded by performance, not by love. Everything that is happening from the moment the athlete and the coach begin their training together, to the moment they enter Olympic Village is driven by being the best.
The recreational swimmers don’t want or need to be the best. And especially with the father and his son, swimming is merely the activity that bonds father and son closer together.
We don’t cast out the bondwoman and her son by denying or ignoring all that is true about a swimming pool.
Even as recreational swimmers, it’s not a good idea to run on the wet concrete. It’s probably not useful to steal the lifeguard’s whistle. It’s good to use proper swimming techniques to avoid drowning. There’s utility in jumping off of the high dive in such a way so as to not belly flop in the water below.
We participate in all the “best practices” when it comes to swimming, just as the Olympians do.
What we cast out, through faith, is that Gold medal. We cast out the measurement. We cast out our pride. We cast out our self righteousness. We cast out our comparisons, and most importantly, we cast out our confidence in our own abilities.
Would the father desire that the son become such a good swimmer that he finds himself being ignored by his son? That he sees his son rely on his own abilities and stop spending time with him?
Never. We aren’t Olympians, we are recreational swimmers that have been rescued from the abyss and brought into a relationship with the maker of heaven and earth, who is working all things for our good." - Faithann

In episode 41, after telling his congregation his hope for his life as an old man, and how he wants to dig deep to find the rock that is Christ, Larry explains the difference between a counterfeit Christian walk and the biblical walk intended for believers.

In the discussion portion, Faithann and I give a short study on the biblical teaching of "Know, Reckon, Yield". We also talk about T-shirts.

Episode 40 Wave After Wave: Carmen's Story
Thursday Jul 25, 2024
Thursday Jul 25, 2024
In episode 40, we have coupled two of Larry's most wonderfully powerful sermons on the subject of God's sovereignty.
Hear how our very special guest, Carmen, tells her story of sexual abuse and how these truths from Larry's sermons, coming to her through Larry's protégés, started her miraculous healing journey.
Carmen references Daniel's teachings on The Song of Songs with such joy, bringing to light the close relationship she indeed has with her Lord. Beau Jenkins, in his teaching through Romans, has had tremendous affect on Carmen, giving her "wave after wave" of refreshing good news, revealing God's character and sovereign hand in even the most tragic circumstances. You can find Beau's sermon featured in our discussion here.
Also, in the discussion portion, we mention a few things we should consider as we try to support victims of sexual assault. We are learning from a wonderfully rich book written on the subject of sexual abuse called Rid of My Disgrace. We have decided to include this important section of the book here:
What to Say and What Not to Say to a Victim of Sexual Assault
What to Say
Below is a list of things to say that would support and encourage a victim:
I’m sorry this happened to you.
I believe you.
Thank you for telling me.
How can I help?
I’m glad you’re talking with me.
I’m glad you’re safe now.
It wasn’t your fault.
Your reaction is not an uncommon response.
It’s understandable that you feel that way.
You’re not going crazy; these are normal reactions following an assault.
Things may not ever be the same, but they can get better.
It’s okay to cry.
What Not to Say
Hurtful reactions toward a victim may be intentional (victim blaming), or they may arise from ineffective attempts to show compassion by people who mean well but are uninformed. Below is a list of things not to say because they shame, blame, or doubt the victim:
I know how you feel.
I understand.
You’re lucky that____didn’t happen.
It’ll take some time, but you’ll get over it.
Why don’t you tell me more details about what happened.
Don’t worry; it’s going to be all right.
Try to be strong.
Out of tragedies good things happen.
Time heals all wounds.
It was God’s will.
You need to forgive and move on.
Calm down and try to relax.
You should get on with your life.
